Loose Tea vs. Teabags - 5 Reasons to Choose Loose Teas

It's time to think outside the teabag!

The typical teabag contains tiny scraps of tea leaves, usually with the flavor equivalent of sawdust or I like to call...tea dust (fannings).  There is an old joke in the tea industry that says the tea in tea bags is just the tea dust that was swept up from the floor!

Yes, tea bags are convenient but so is INSTANT COFFEE!  When is the last time that you served your guests instant coffee?

As many people will tell you, once you enjoy a superior cup of tea brewed from whole leaves, which are not only incredibly perfumed but often beautifully flecked with various natural and wholesome ingredients such as flower, fruits and herbs, you will be hard pressed to go back to the bagged tea dust of your childhood!

5 Reasons to Choose Loose Teas Over Bagged Teas

1) Super Health Benefits

Since loose tea consists of larger leaves it keeps more of its powerful catechin antioxidants and plentiful plant polyphenols.  Tea can help prevent certain cancers, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, aid in weight loss, and boost the immune system. Tea brewed by the bag contains fewer of these properties.

2) Bigger Aroma And Complex Flavor

Loose tea has more surface area and the larger the leaves, the more natural oils you get to steep out of them, and this of course means great flavor, along with a pleasant scent!  Bags will add a color to your cup, but not much after that!

3) More Varieties To Explore - Regional, Type, Season...

Tea in general is broken into four main types, white, green, oolong, and black.  Each tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant but is processed differently (we will get into this in another post).  In addition to these four main types, there are also seasonal teas, the region it comes from, steeping times...the variety is endless.

4) Loose Tea Is Fresher

In order for tea to have a good quality, it must be young and fresh. Did you ever wonder how old those bags are? Sometimes tea can sit on the supermarket shelves for up to 18 months not to mention the waiting time before it even arrives.  It is always better to get small batch teas to ensure freshness.

5) Loose Tea Is Fun To Make

Loose teas have all sorts of tea accessories to choose from....tea ballers, tea mugs, tea thermoses, tea pots...just to name a few!  All designed to give you the best tea experience ever!
